WPFP HIke on October 23

Hike the West Point Foundry Preserve with Archaeologist Arron Kottlensky
Saturday, October 23, 4 pm

Join PCHS for a hike of Scenic Hudson's West Point Foundry Preserve with archaeologist Arron Kotlensky, who worked on the site as a graduate student for Michigan Technological. The foundry operated in Cold Spring from 1818 through 1911, and was a pacesetter in America's Industrial Revolution. Best known for supplying the United States government with ordnance, including the Parrott gun during the Civil War, the foundry also produced some of the nation's first steam engines, locomotives, and ironclad ships. The tour will focus on the operation of the foundry, the relationship between the foundry and the surrounding landscape, and what eight seasons of archaeology revealed about the history of this nationally-significant site.

The hike will meet at the Putnam County Historical Society, 63 Chestnut Street in Cold Spring. Long pants, sleeves, sturdy sneakers, and a hiking stick are recommended. This tour is free for members and donors, and $5 for the general public. Space is limited; reservations are strongly suggested. Please call 845-265-4010 or office@pchs-fsm.org.
