Lecture with Col. Ty Seidule on August 7
Gentlemen Warriors or Traitorous Scoundrels? West Point's Memory of Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Generals
Saturday, August 7, 5 pm
West Point educated the most famous and effective Confederate generals of the Civil War including Robert E. Lee. Yet Lee and his fellow Confederates resigned their commissions and fought against the United States Army. Join former PCHS board member Leslie Jacobson for a lecture with Colonel Ty Seidule about how the Military Academy has remembered her Confederate sons. He will explore how some of the most iconic West Point buildings, monuments, and paintings represent efforts by faculty and alumni to banish or include the Confederates.
Colonel Ty Seidule is a Professor of History at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, where he serves as the Chief of International History. Before arriving at the Military Academy, Colonel Seidule commanded an armor training battalion. During his twenty-six year army career, he has served in armor and infantry units in Europe and the United States. During the first Gulf War, he commanded a cavalry troop in the 82nd Airborne Division. Colonel Seidule received a B.A. from Washington and Lee University and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.
The Putnam County Historical Society is located at 63 Chestnut Street. This lecture is free to members, and $5 for the general public. Space is limited; reservations are strongly suggested. Please call 845-265-4010 or visit our website, www.pchs-fsm.org.
