Lecture with Acclaimed Storyteller, Jonathan Kruk

Saturday, October 1st, 5 pm
Legends and Lore of Sleepy Hollow and the Hudson Valley

You’ve seen Jonathan Kruk perform, but did you ever wonder about the behind-the-scenes research that goes into crafting those terrific tales? Join the Putnam County Historical Society for a lecture with Kruk, and learn about the sources for his tales as presented in his newest book for grown-ups, Legends and Lore of Sleepy Hollow and the Hudson Valley.

Kruk will explain the research behind the stories he performs and present information gleaned from countless hours spent in regional libraries and archives including the Putnam County Historical Society. Of particular note is a Philipstown tale of a headless ghost that may have influenced Washington Irving’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow, perhaps learned via his Cold Spring friend, Gouvenour Kemble. Guests will also learn about historical tales of other Hudson Valley ghosts, such as mischevious imps on Storm King mountain and the ghost of Major Andre’s search for redemption.

A native of Katonah, Kruk holds a Master’s degree in education and has been a professional children's storyteller for over two decades. His recordings have earned Parent's Choice Silver and N.A.P.P.A honors awards and he was presented with a citizens medal by the National Sons of the American Revolution. Kruk presents at schools, historic sites, libraries and other venues. His new book, Legends and Lore of Sleepy Hollow and the Hudson Valley, published by The History Press, will be available for sale and signing.

This event is geared towards adults but is also appropriate for children ages 9 and up. The Putnam County Historical Society & Foundry School is located at 63 Chestnut Street in Cold Spring. Free for the general public. Space is limited, RSVP to 845-265-4010 or office@pchs-fsm.org.
