Our bicentennial lecture series will kick off with a lecture by Vin Dacquino on the life of Sybil Ludington, a heroine from our own backyard, who earned a place in American History on a rainy night in 1777 when she rode 40 miles through enemy infested woods to summon her father's regiment to halt a British raid on Connecticut and New York. Though Paul Revere is the most celebrated revolutionary to sound the call to arms, Sybil Ludinton's ride was bolder and far more dangerous, and she was only sixteen years old. Iconic modern designer, Russel Wright (1904-1976) is best known for his popular home furnishings and tableware, most notably the American Modern dinnerware he created in the mid-20th-century. Wright made good design affordable, saying frequently, “good design is for everyone.” In 1942, he and his wife, Mary, acquired 75 acres of rugged land in Garrison, which had been devastated by years of quarrying and logging. They named the property Manitoga, from Algonquin words meaning “place of great spirit”. In 1957, Wright designed and built Dragon Rock, his home, plus his connecting studio, into the quarry rim, expressing his vision of “living in harmony with nature.” The house was completed in 1962 and Wright lived there with his daughter, Ann, and later with his life partner, Joe Chapman. Manitoga is a National Historic Landmark and a charter member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios.

Historic Family of Putnam County Award

The 2011 PCHS Gala will honor the Hamilton Fish family, whose history in the Highlands dates back 150 years, with the Historic Family of Putnam County Award. The refinement of underwater survey technology and the advancement of nautical archaeology have produced a treasure trove of new historical information, unlocking the secrets of once-invisible, submerged cultural resources.

Join PCHS for What Lies Beneath: Shipwrecks of Lake Champlain and the Hudson River, an illustrated lecture with Art Cohn, co-founder and director of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum at Basin Harbor Vermont. He will outline the significant chapters of the region’s history through what is currently known about the collection of shipwrecks in Lake Champlain. Several hundred wooden ships have been studied, including Native American vessels, French and British war ships from the 1750s, Revolutionary War ships, War of 1812 ships, and ships of commerce up until 1920. Some ships are mostly intact, some with masts still standing, because they've been in fresh water. Cohn will also present the newly emerging story of shipwrecks in the Hudson River.

A professional diver and nautical archaeologist, Cohn has served as coordinator of the State of Vermont’s Underwater Historic Preserve Program since 1985. He led the 10-year Lake Survey project, which systematically mapped the Lake Champlain’s lake floor, finding more than 70 previously undiscovered shipwrecks. He was a 2000 and 2001 delegate a United States delegate to the United Nations Educational, Science and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) conference on the protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage in Paris. He is on the adjunct faculty of the University of Vermont and the Institute of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A&M University. Cohn is the author of many publications, including his latest, Lake Champlain’s Sailing Canal Boats: An Illustrated Journey from Burlington Bay to the Hudson River.

The lecture will be held at the Putnam County Historical Society, 63 Chestnut Street in Cold Spring. The foundry operated in Cold Spring from 1818 through 1911, and was a pacesetter in America's Industrial Revolution. Best known for supplying the United States government with ordnance, including the Parrott gun during the Civil War, the foundry also produced some of the nation's first steam engines, locomotives, and ironclad ships. The tour will focus on the operation of the foundry, the relationship between the foundry and the surrounding landscape, and what eight seasons of archaeology revealed about the history of this nationally-significant site.

The hike will meet at the Putnam County Historical Society, 63 Chestnut Street in Cold Spring. A special section features images of parade float and river celebrations from the 1909 Hudson-Fulton Celebration. The postcards date from the first third of the 20th century, with most from 1905 to 1911, and are drawn from a collection of some 4,000 cards compiled by Larry Demers, a former resident of Cold Spring. The exhibition curator, Dr. Trudie Grace, will be on hand to answer questions.

The evening continues with a lecture by Kate Johnson, Curator and Director of Collections for Historic Hudson Valley, author of The Hudson-Fulton Celebration: New York’s River Festival of 1909 and the Making of a Metropolis. Timed to coincide with the Quadricentennial of Henry Hudson’s 1609 voyage up the Hudson River, the grant will be implemented in partnership with the Putnam County Historical Society & Foundry School Museum (PCHS–FSM). A series of programs, exhibitions, and public outreach initiatives will engage the community in our local history and to draw tourists to our local heritage sites.

Preserve America is a White House initiative developed in cooperation with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the U.S. Department of the Interior and the U.S. Department of Commerce. Preserve America goals are to share knowledge about our nation’s past, to strengthen regional identities and local pride, to increase local participation in preserving our country’s irreplaceable cultural and natural heritage assets and to support economic vitality in local communities. In 2004 County Legislator Vincent Tamagna secured a Preserve America Community designation for Putnam. The county was one of the first eight communities in the country to receive this designation. This heritage tourism grant is the third Preserve America grant the county has received; in 2007, funds were secured for the development of an interpretative plan for Scenic Hudson’s West Point Foundry Preserve; in 2008, funds were secured for the restoration of the Grove.

“I am thrilled that another preservation project in Putnam County has been considered historically significant to qualify for the very competitive Preserve America funding. We have the opportunity to protect and share our historical heritage during the Quadricentennial celebration as well as bolstering our local economy with the financial support tourists and visitors will bring to our community,” said Putnam County Legislator Vincent Tamagna. The grant, which totals $82,125, is dependent in part on PCHS raising matching funds, which will be an important part of PCHS’s development efforts in 2009. Grant and matching funds will allow for an exciting slate of projects in 2009, including a Quadricentennial Lecture Series, a monthly program that takes an in-depth look at various aspects of Henry Hudson’s legacy, and a major exhibition about the 19th Century newspaperman, editor, poet and songwriter, George Pope Morris, co-organized with the Boston Athenaeum. To make a donation, please call 845-265-4010 or visit the PCHS website at www.pchs-fsm.org.

Dutch Colonial Lecture

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
